Bio

Dr. José Antonio Gutiérrez is post-doctoral researcher at REPI. He has experience working on conflict, illegal economies, and contentious politics, with a particular expertise in Colombia. He has also worked on gender, rural research and sustainability. He has frequently worked in multinational and transdisciplinary teams in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa. He has worked as researcher in two H2020 projects: PRUV -Preparedeness and Resilience to Address Urban Vulnerability (Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 691060) as researcher with University College Dublin, and Ploutos -Data Driven Sustainable Agri-Food Chains (grant agreement No. 101000594), as post-doctoral researcher with Teagasc, the agriculture and food development authority of Ireland. At present, he is exploring dynamics of organised violence in post peace agreement societies.

 

He defended his PhD thesis on “Insurgent Institutions: Refractory communities, armed insurgency and institution-building in the Colombian conflict” in January 2019, at University College Dublin. His ethnographic research explores social fabric and institution-building in insurgency controlled areas. His doctoral research was kindly funded by the Andrew Grene Scholarship of the Irish Research Council and the Conflict Resolution Unit of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Government of Ireland (GOIPG/2015/2479). In 2014 he was research assistant on the Historical Commission of the Conflict and its Victims in Colombia, in the context of the peace negotiations between the FARC-EP rebels and the Government of Colombia. He has lectured in Colombia (USTA) and Ireland (UCD, TCD). 

 

He is a member of the European Society for Rural Sociology, the Marie Curie Alumni Association, and of the International Transformative Justice Network. He is Research Fellow of the Institute for International Conflict Resolution and Reconstruction of the Dublin City University (IICRR, DCU) and is associated to the Colombian think tank Centro de Investigación y Acción para la Paz y los Derechos Humanos (CIPADH).
